There has been an explosion of interest and activity in kayaking on the Weweantic River. This seems only natural in a setting surrounded by some of the most spectacular coastlines and blessed If you want to experience a true ocean adventure, try sea kayaking on the Weweantic River.
Weweantic is a corruption of the original word in the Wampanoag's language, Weweantit. It means "Crooked River" in Wanpanoag. The Wampannoags were the first people to live along the rivers and shores of Buzzards Bay. The river begins in the town of Carver where South Meadow Brook and Rocky Meadow Brook meet. It travels 15 miles to the sea and ends at the confluence of the Wareham River in Buzzards Bay. Its watershed covers 55,000 acres.
At its upper end, the Weweantic travels through red maple swamps, bogs, and marshes. The red maples add tannic acid to the water which gives it a red tinge on its upper reaches. The upper part of the river has supported cranberry cultivation for over 200 years. Several small dams are used to maintain small ponds for cranberry flooding and irrigation. The river widens at the Tremont dam near Route 28 where it passes under that road. From the dam, there is a steep gradient and the river courses through largely undeveloped and unspoiled natural woodlands, untouched since before the Pilgrim's landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. The river runs into another dam called the Horseshoe Pond Dam and this is considered to be the beginning of the Weweantic estuary and the end of Buzzards Bay tidal influx. Remnants of many species try to get beyond the Horseshoe Pond Dam. Some of these these include Tom Cod, American Eels, Rainbox Smelt, Blueback Herring, Alewives, and Sea Lampreys. Eagles and Ospreys are also found along the banks of the Weweantic River. Striped Bass haunt its shores during the spring and fall when the water is cool.
